On leaving university, I followed in my mother’s footsteps as a teacher and after a couple of years’ of ‘national service’ in tough Yorkshire schools, retrained as an accountant and then as a financial planner.
Today, I combine the communication skills developed in teaching, the accountant’s eye for detail and a natural flair for seeing the bigger picture and relating it back to the individual.
I know from my experience that significant decisions about money often come with substantial change and/or stress, e.g. inheritance, retirement, selling your home and moving into care etc so I make sure the financial planning process doesn’t add to that stress.
A large part of my role is to give clients (particularly those that have never previously had to handle significant amounts of money) the confidence to act.
My financial planning philosophy is conservative. The rule of thumb that I use is ‘would I be happy for my mum to put her money into this?’
Having previously completed the Great North Run, the Trans Peak Challenge (26 Miles by foot and bike), the Highland Challenge (60 Miles by foot, bike and canoe across Scotland) and the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, I recently ticked another challenge off the list – completing a Marathon before the age of 50.
